My academic career included research and scholarly work in journalism, media, communication, and related social issues. I conducted and contributed to research projects, presented academic work, and participated in research and professional forums.
My research experience strengthened my skills in information gathering, critical analysis, academic and professional writing, interviewing, and communicating complex ideas to different audiences.
Alongside research, I contributed to academic publications, teaching materials, and communication-focused projects developed through my university roles.
📘Teaching Experience
Teaching and Mentorship
I spent more than 14 years teaching Journalism and Communication at universities in Ethiopia, delivering courses in journalism, media production, communication, research, and related areas. My work combined classroom instruction with practical learning, student mentoring, and academic advising.
Beyond teaching, I supported students through media projects, research, student associations, and hands-on learning opportunities. I also integrated evolving media technologies and professional practices into the learning environment.
This experience developed strong skills in communication, presentation, mentoring, collaboration, and translating complex information into clear and engaging content.
💻 Digital Media & Professional Experience
Digital Media, Technology & Marketing
Since transitioning into Canada’s digital media industry, I have built practical experience across digital content creation, web design, SEO, social media marketing, graphic design, and technology support.
I currently work as a Part-Time IT Support & SEO Specialist with Workow Inc., supporting classroom and audiovisual technology while contributing to SEO audits and website performance analysis. My previous experience includes digital content and graphic design internships with SalesEra and Canyon Entertainment Group, where I worked on social media content, video, branding, UX, and digital marketing projects.
I also completed a Growth Marketing Apprenticeship through Acadium, gaining hands-on experience with content strategy and social media marketing. Together, these experiences have strengthened my ability to combine communication, creative production, digital marketing, web, and technology skills in professional environments.
📑Curriculum & Program Development
Curriculum Design & Academic Innovation
I played a leading role in developing, reviewing, and updating Journalism and Communication curricula to meet evolving academic standards and media industry needs. At Wollo University, I helped establish the department, adapted the national modular curriculum, and supported the development of an educational media laboratory for practical training. At Dilla University, I co-founded the department and contributed to establishing a digital media lab.
I also contributed to national curriculum reform initiatives organized by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education in 2008 and 2013, with involvement in course design, teaching materials, and curriculum development at university, cluster, and national levels.
🏛️ Academic Leadership & Governance
Leadership and Coordination
Throughout my academic career, I held leadership roles in teaching, research, and community engagement. As a department head and coordinator, I managed academic teams, supported research and outreach initiatives, and helped establish journalism student associations and extracurricular learning opportunities.
I also served on the boards of Amhara Media Corporation and Wollo University’s Community-Based Radio, contributing to media initiatives, communication, and public education. These experiences strengthened my leadership, collaboration, and strategic communication skills.
🌍 International Exposure
Global Engagement & International Representation
In 2023, I participated in the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists – Research and Investigation, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The international exchange brought together media professionals to explore investigative journalism, press freedom, and the role of media in democratic societies.
I also represented Wollo University’s Journalism Department at the 2019 World Press Freedom Day conference in Addis Ababa, co-hosted by UNESCO and the African Union, engaging in discussions on journalism, democratic development, and press freedom in Africa.

Building Connections Through Community Engagement
My commitment to community engagement continues across both my professional and academic journey. In Canada, I volunteer with the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO), connecting with the local creative community and supporting opportunities related to arts, culture, and community engagement.
Previously, I served as a Board Member of Medhanialem General Primary School in Dessie and participated in university and community initiatives supporting education and institutional development. I was also involved with professional and community associations in Ethiopia.
These experiences reflect my commitment to using communication, media, and professional skills to support community-focused initiatives.
